ISSUE 5: NOVEMBER 1999

CAPTAINS LOG

Another month another mission. We were pleased to welcome our friends, from the USS Lutonia, to our meeting. Friendships are definitely being formed and I think that this will only benefit the two clubs. Unfortunately, their next meeting will be the first night of our 'TREKATHON' for the Children in Need appeal. However, we have invited them to join us on the Saturday or Sunday. I hear on the grapevine that Admiral Andy says that because they took all our raffle prizes last time, they are taking all our women this time! He'll need to keep more control of his zip to do that, or do we all need safety pins to keep him in order? By the way, the USS Lutonia Newsleter will be available from the Ops Desk at 50p per copy.

On Saturday 16th November, the Sea Cadets ran a cake stall in Bury St Edmunds, in aid of the National Autistic Society. They raised £86.06. The October meeting Raffle proceeds also went towards this worthy cause, making a total of £111.06 The Sea Cadets and I would like to thank everyone who helped on the cake stall.

The Manor House Museum Exhibition was fun, for those who took part. We had some public interest in the club. The Museum paid expenses and gave us a donation. We never did get the Borg regeneration chamber finished but that is an ongoing project for November.

My thanks to Selene (you should see her Klingon outfit) and her Mother, Sea Spirit (our newest member) for keeping us well fed. Sea Spirits' chocolate cookies are to die for! Her medieval slice is pretty wonderful as well (not if you're on a diet). It was a good weekend, the General was down with K'Bang, Leigh and Dominic stayed at my place on Saturday night and we had a most unusual game of cards! I'll leave it to 'Leigh's Bit' to tell you about it. It was also Dominics' 16th birthday so, congratulations Dom.

Our next away mission was Sunday November 7th at Ipswich. It was….. Well…. Different! (See Captains Log Supplemental).

Saturday, 13th November is the STAR TREK evening at the Black Horse, in East St, Sudbury. There will be Karaoke, and the landlord is laying on food (each to his own, I suppose!!).

I apologise if you didn't get a Newsletter last month, trouble with the photocopier. This month I am posting them out early, to make sure that you all get them in time for our Children in Need weekend, which also covers the November meeting. Details on a separate page.

Our December meeting (19th) will also be our Christmas Party. The meeting starts at 4pm instead of 2pm. This is to allow for rehearsals and decorating the hall.

Food and drink is to be brought by members, as we did at the wedding. It worked very well last time.

Two points to remember:

1. Ships' Concert in the evening - please let me know how you can contribute: singing, comedy sketch, dance etc.,

2. I'd like to do a big raffle, so seasonal prizes would be appreciated - let me, or the Ops Desk, know what you can donate.

An Idea has been sent to me by Louise Gallagher. Instead of everyone buying Christmas Cards for everyone else and trying not to miss anyone out. Why don't we all pay £1.00 (or a donation) in to a pot (in lieu of Christmas cards) and then donate it to a nominated charity such as, the Rainbow Appeal. After all, Christmas is about children from 0 - 100. I think it is an excellent idea. Let me know what you think.

Also for the Christmas meeting, I'd like everyone to bring a Unisex gift, costing less than £2.50. For those with children under 12, something for all ages costing no more than £1.50.Then we can have a lucky dip or we can get a Santa to deliver them. There are plenty of discount stores around, selling interesting gifts on a budget.

The proceeds of the raffle in November will go to Children in Need, we are looking to shops and businesses to donate something special.

That's all the news for now. See you all soon.

Captain Anarita Jat.

EDITORS CORNER

Just a short note to say that this issue was mostly information to members about the impending TREKATHON for Children in Need. Although there were a few good articles submitted, I have included these.

This issue has also been edited by a different person (T'Pina). Due to the fact that the usual editors have been unexpectedly swamped by college assignments.

So if the content of this issue appears to be a little light and missing one or two of our regular features, now you know why. Still, I hope you find the articles that are here interesting.

PERSONAL LOG

Hello, my name is Gabrielle Cerys. I am Orcalian. We are known as the practical jokers of the Federation. My home world, Orcal, is in the Pacifica System, which is 7 light years into Federation Space near the Federation/Cadassian border.

Our world is 95% water and we are an amphibian race. We have been left out of many conflicts in the surrounding area due to the fact that most of our civilisation is beneath the Seas. We like to think that our world is an underwater Risa.

I have been assigned to Starbase 410 principally to help the Klingon Naval Exploration vessels identify and log any new marine life-forms that are discovered. I am, of course, a marine biologist. I have also been assigned to the station to aid relations between the Klingon Empire and Orcal. A recent practical joke (our traditional way of breaking a deadlock) at a diplomatic conference went slightly wrong a nd soured relations between my home world, the Klingon Empire and the Vulcans.

Our Ambassador decided that to break the deadlock during the treaty conference, he would put a Tribble in the Klingon Ambassador's rooms and another in the Vulcan Ambassador's rooms.

Unfortunately the animals had been fed recently and by the end of the first 23 hour meeting, these single Tribbles had become many. The Klingon Ambassador threatened to kill our Ambassador and chased him around the conference table! And the Vulcans became more frosty than usual towards us.

Some races have no sense of humour.

Gabrielle

VIEW POINT

WHY I JOINED STARBASE 410

I know there are different reasons why we have joined Starbase 410 I thought I would share mine with you.

As I was growing up I remember being enthralled by all the interest in space travel and still recall the excitement of the first lunar landing. It's no t surprising then that I developed a fascination for sci-fi on the TV. My earliest recollections are of great programmes such as Dr Who (with William Hartnell and also of Peter Cushing in a Dr Who film) and Lost in Space. I also remember when Star Trek the original series was shown. I thought Captain Kirk was great and I adored Bones. As we went into the 70s my appetite was further fuelled by UFO but it wasn't until the mid 70s that I got my first taste of addiction to a sci-fi programme.

This was another series by the brilliant Gerry Anderson and it was Space 1999. I fell hook line and sinker for Martin Landau who played Commander Koenig with his dashing looks and calm demeanour. They only made two seasons of this show and I was heartbroken when it was over.

This was before most people had video recorders. Hell, we only had a 12inch Black &White TV . I used to sit and watch it at 1pm on Sunday when it was broadcast by Granada, when it was finished I retuned the TV to receive HTV Wales which broadcast the same episode at 2pm. The reception was lousy but I used to put up with it just so I could see the episode again. I used to think the acting was great and the stories terrific but when the BBC showed the repeats in 1998 I was shattered to see how wooden they all were. But I still think the story lines were pretty sound.

During the 80s and early 90s I drifted from sci-fi. I really can't think of any outstanding shows at that time. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed The Next Generation but it didn't grip me like 1999 had.

All this changed one Sunday late 1996. Babylon 5 had finished the previous week so I looked through the paper to see what was on and saw Star Trek advertised on BBC2. Now I was expecting TOS so it was a wonderful surprise to see a new series. The episode was Parallax so it wasn't until the opening theme tune was over that I got my first view of Captain Janeway. I was immediately impressed with the way this Woman just oozed authority yet still retained her femininity.

As the series progressed I became totally hooked. I thought Kate Mulgrew's portrayal was excellent and it amazed me how this diminuitive person actually appeared larger than the 6ft Guys she was commanding. I liked the way she reprimanded her crew without raising her voice. Two good examples are the scenes with Tuvok and Torres in Prime Factors and Chakotay in Manoeuvres.

She also brought great compassion to the role, I know many people didn't approve but being a very tactile person I liked the way she placed a hand on a crew members shoulder or touched their hand. Unfortunately Season 4 saw a diversion from this but I'm glad to say that Season 5's Janeway has been much more tactile.

I still love the series and adore Janeway but I don't like the way she has been written since the introduction of Seven. But KM is very professional and she gives superb performances with the material she is given.

My Husband and Son obviously know about my obsession with Voyager even agreeing to go to Birmingham for the ST Exhibition in 97 and to LA and Vegas last year to see the experience and around Paramount. But it wasn't until I saw Anne's advert and joined the club that "I came out of the closet".

Through the club I have made many friends and enjoy the meetings and away missions. It enables me to talk about my favourite show and characters without people thinking I'm barking mad and most importantly with people who know what I'm talking about.

I know we are a new club and are bound to experience teething problems but I feel that as long as we retain our enthusiasm we can turn this into the best Star Trek club in East Anglia.

EPISODE REVIEW

Hope and Fear

Well I think I must be suffering from an over exposure to 7 of 9 because I wasn't feeling terribly bothered about this being the Season Finale. My husband recorded it for me and missed most of the opening sequence with Janeway and Seven and I didn't even shout (which worried him a little). All I thought was why do they have to dress Janeway so dowdily.

Now normally when I watch Trek I tend to take all the technical stuff without questioning it but not this time. How did Arturis manage to plan all this? He must've been a pretty quick thinker because he only had a few minutes to alter the Admirals message. Then all of a sudden we have co-ordinates, which are less than 10 light years away, and low and behold the Dauntless is waiting for them with a Federation signature and looking suspiciously like a Starfleet vessel.

Then when Chakotay, Tuvok and Tom are on board the Dauntless it suddenly takes off. The vessel is obviously remote controlled but how does he manage to do it. When his plan is uncovered and Janeway meets Tuvok and co. on the bridge of the Dauntless, Arturis is wrestling the security guard why does she nod at Tuvok to fire on him, she had her own phaser and we know from past episodes she's not afraid of using it. During this struggle Arturis pulls a lever and the bridge controls are changed back but not anywhere else as we discover later on when Seven is in engineering it's still Starfleet control panels.

Major nit-picks now, How did he know she had negotiated with the Borg and how had he managed to observe them for 3 months without being detected? Now I know this must seem as if I disliked the episode, but that's not the case. I did like the story line and the way they tied Season 3's finale with this one. There were some good moments, there was lots of Janeway screen time, which is always a good thing, but Kate also had some good interactions with several characters.

  1. Nice scene with Chakotay in the mess Hall at the beginning when she asked him to join her for coffee, the only thing that marred this was Chakotay suggesting she ask Seven to help her with the algorithms.
  2. The way she stopped Tuvok from leaving the briefing room and confessed that she had doubts about the whole situation, I think that Tim and Kate always act well together. 3. Liked it that Seven tried out her first joke on her.
  3. Good scenes with Arturis especially when he drops the bombshell on her that he feels she is responsible for the destruction of her home planet.

Basically a reasonable episode, not really befitting as a finale. Two saving graces, Seven didn't single handed save the ship and Janeway beat her in the rematch at velocity.
